Why sustainability is more than a promise for UNFOLD Outdoor

Sustainability is not a trend or a marketing promise for me.
It's an attitude – and it starts with me personally.

I'm Lisa, founder of UNFOLD Outdoor, and mother of three young children. Watching them play outdoors, travel, and explore the world constantly reminds me how precious our planet is. That's precisely why I founded UNFOLD Outdoor.

A cuddly blanket from real life

The UNFOLD cuddly blanket was not created on the drawing board.
I developed it during my parental leave trip – out of a desire to create a product that accompanies us everywhere.

Today my children use the blanket all year round:

  • in bed for sleeping
  • on the couch for reading
  • outside in the garden
  • used as a sleeping bag when camping
  • when traveling in a compression sack
  • when staying overnight at friends' houses

When it's warm, we use the colored side; when it gets cooler, we use the fluffy side.
We always have their matching pillowcase with us, where they can tuck their little ones away when they sleep. And our dog now has his own cuddly blanket too.

For us, it's more than just a blanket.
It's a feel-good factor.

Selected materials instead of virgin plastic

A key component of our sustainability is the use of existing materials.

All our products are made from recycled polyester (rPET). Both the polyester and the polyurethane, which is partially polyester-based, are produced from recycled PET bottles.

This way, durable outdoor products are created from existing resources – instead of from new plastic.

PFAS-free & independently tested

Our cuddly blanket is PFAS-free and features an EcoElite™ coating based on renewable raw materials.

In addition, our products undergo independent testing:

  • OEKO-TEX® (incl. manufacturer certification)

  • voluntarily according to REACH

For me, it's clear: Products that children use daily must be tested particularly carefully.

Waterproof, quiet & durable

The waterproofing is achieved through a TPU film , which is more durable and sustainable than classic coatings applied directly to the fabric.

The ripstop material used was deliberately chosen to be of a higher quality:

  • less rustling

  • comfortable grip

  • noticeable quality

Less washing, more responsibility

Our cuddly blanket doesn't need to be washed constantly.
Often, wiping or rinsing is sufficient – this saves water, energy and protects the material.

Those who want to avoid microplastics can use a laundry bag when washing.

Repair instead of discard

We keep spare parts in stock and repair minor defects whenever possible. Even blankets with small flaws should continue to be used – because for me, true sustainability means keeping products in circulation.

More climate-friendly logistics

We organize the transport of our products from production to our warehouse – wherever possible – by train , as this is significantly more environmentally friendly than air or sea freight.

Shipping to our customers takes place as follows:

  • in recycled shipping boxes

  • preferably with DHL GoGreen , where unavoidable emissions are offset through climate protection projects.

Responsibility in production

Our production facility is located in Hangzhou (China) .
I visited the company myself and have been working closely with our partner since the crowdfunding campaign. Fair working conditions, safety, and transparency are our top priorities.

Sustainability is one way

UNFOLD Outdoor originated from my own everyday life – and that's exactly where it's used daily.

For my children.
For you.
And for our planet. 🌱
